Arnhem, The Netherlands: For many people in the Netherlands, or outside the country’s borders, Arnhem is most probably known as the city where tourists can admire the Open Air Museum with its quaint windmills and farmhouses. However, more recently, the city has earned a rather interesting nickname: the most Bitcoin-friendly city in the world.
And that, for a good reason; 40 merchants inside the city accept Bitcoin, and the online currency can be used by people shopping with these venues.
Arnhem Bitcoinstad is building a solid reputation with purchasers who can buy flowers, liquor, clothes, pancakes and even order a cup of coffee while paying with Bitcoin. The ease of use, the technological aspect and the popularity with the younger crowd are all reasons why Arnhem is willing to go the extra mile and expand the use of the well known currency.
The lucky number 40 for the merchants in Arnhem accepting Bitcoin was just met by the most recent addition: Spar Arnhem Central is the first supermarket to accept the currency. It is conveniently located between the train station and the city and it offers the same range of products as any other supermarket, from fruits and vegetables to frozen meats.
While the exposure was so far considered limited with mainly fancy stores joining the initiative, the appearance of the first supermarket accepting Bitcoin allows locals and tourists to purchase almost anything they want using nothing but their smartphones and, of course, their Bitcoin accounts.
